Stop The War On Fun!

The opposition to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control‘s attempt to shut down some of San Francisco’s finest all ages music venues takes a public face with the launch of the official website and rebranded PR campaign dubbed, Stop the War on Fun!

For those new to the issue, San Francisco has come under attack by the ABC on legally questionable new regulations they are trying to impose on some of the City’s legendary all ages music venues.  If enforced some of our best music clubs – Bottom of the HillGreat American Music HallSlim’s and Cafe du Nord – may be forced to close.

The fight has become the central issue in a recent crackdown on all things fun in the City caused by the State’s increased harassment of live music and entertainment venues for, what many call, inane technicalities. For example, Bottom of the Hill has been cited by the ABC for not serving enough Mexican food.

Stop the War on Fun is the official battleground for this fight and includes important resources and information on how to get involved.  They’ve made it easy to get started with an automated email form you can send to Mayor Newsom, Senator Leno, Assemblyman Ammiano, the SF Board of Supervisors, and SF Police Chief Gascon.

Love and Rockets Tribute Album

Love and Rockets, “Rain Bird

Reading the announcement that WOXY was exclusively previewing the Love and Rockets Tribute Album this week was like coming full circle for me. I grew up in Ohio and cut my teeth on WOXY (bam! The Future of Rock-n-Roll). And Love and Rockets was one of those bands they turned me on to, way back when in my formative years. So it’s with great satisfaction that this same station (to whom I hold somewhat accountable for my OCMD) brings these New Tales to Tell direct to my speakers -albeit in California not Ohio (thank god).

And judging by the line up of artists paying tribute, it appears as though Love and Rockets are getting their moment in the spotlight.  This is a good thing too.  I’m not sure how many more new bands I could take citing The Jesus and Mary Chain in their list of influences.  The list of artists paying tribute include: THE FLAMING LIPSBLACK FRANCISTHE DANDY WARHOLSMAYNARD JAMES KEENAN’S band PUSCIFERA PLACE TO BURY STRANGERSFILM SCHOOL, and more.

The Love and Rockets Tribute Album exclusive airs on WOXY,  Wed. July 1 @ 9pm, Thur. July 2 @ 6pm, Sat. July 4 @ 4pm, and Sun, July 5 @ Noon, and then on-demand through the WOXY website.  The album, New Tale to Tell, a Tribute to Love and Rockets, will be released digitally July 28 and in stores August 18.

The Almighty Defenders: Black Lips + King Khan + Mark Sultan

l_170b82d1050d4d1f8db610a0fbeb0472

Vice Records announced on their website last week that King Khan and BBQ Show, the Black Lips and Mark Sultan have joined forces to create a new band, The Almighty Defenders.  Wow! Just pause for a moment to wrap your head around that one. Both King Khan and Black Lips have such notorious live shows, one can hardly image what would happen if they all got on stage and performed together. Spontaneous combustion?

Their self-titled debut is due out September 22.  No MP3s released as of yet, but I will be tracking this one closely.

Meet Smashing Pumpkins New Drummer

For those who read The OCMD regularly, you know how I feel about The Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan. When drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the last standing original member of The Smashing Pumpkins, quit the band I couldn’t help but laugh.  I laughed even harder when Billy set up an open audition for a new drummer.  Because who in their right mind would work with such a bona fide butt head?

The 19 year old Berklee College of Music freshman and Oregon native Mike Byrne will.  Maybe because he’s too young to know any better.  He was born the same year the band was formed after all.  Whatever the case, the guy can drum – that’s for sure. Here’s the audition video he submitted for review. Only 12 drummers were chosen to audition for the gig (including System of a Down’s John Dolomayan).

SF Music Venues Continue to Battle ABC for Licensing

The battle between California’s Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) and some of San Francisco’s most beloved all ages music venues wages on.  Here’s a YouTube clip of a recent report from NBC 11 explaining the situation. Imagine a San Francisco without a Bottom of the Hill, Great American Music Hall, Cafe du Nord and Slims.  I cannot!  Here’s what you can do to get involved.

Like Deerhunter? Meet Circulatory System

l_e6db24b57c89441986fc5ca2b0d54ae5

Circulatory System, “The Spinning Continuous“:

More than likely you’ve heard of Deerhunter.  Their last album, Microcastle, topped many ‘Best Of’ lists last year, including mine. But what about Circulatory System?  Yeah, me neither but you soon will – trust me.  I got tipped on their forthcoming album, Signal Morning, recently, took a listen and have been smiling ever since.  It was like listening to Deerhunter on a Beatles Magical Mystery Tour. Holy head trip! This is fan-fucking-tastic, who are these guys?

As it turns out, Circulatory System has been around a while and share much in common with Deerhunter.  Both were formed in 2001 in Georgia, have received critical acclaim and have front men tormented by disease. Circulatory System was founded by Will Cullen Hart after Olivia Tremor Control fell dormant in 2000.  He and most of the other Olivias now comprise much of the band.  Their eponymous debut album was released that same year to much critical acclaim and their long awaited sophomore release, Signal Morning, is finally due out September 8.

Seven and a half years in the making, Signal Morning has been sculpted from countless hours of recordings.  The end product is a heady, complex and orchestral sonic journey.  The songs, composed by Hart, explore his battle with Mutliple Sclerosis – much in the same way as Bradford Cox explores his plight with Marfan Syndrome in his work with Deerhunter and Atlas Sound.  And like Deerhunter’s trajectory with Microcastle, I expect this album will explode and take them to a higher level.

P.S. Rumor has it that Olivia Tremor Control is together and recording again too!

Thanks Adam for the tip!

Jay Bennett Dies at 45

I was so sad to read today that Jay Bennett, the former and controversial member of Wilco, died in his sleep this Sunday. While he may be best known for his tumultuous and strained relationship with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, he was nonetheless a talented artist and feel fortunate to have seen him perform with Wilco and as a solo artist. R.I.P., Jay Bennett.

Radiohead In Studio

radiohead

Hey all you Radiohead disciples, BBC Music News reported that the band is in the studio working with famed producer Nigel Godrich on the follow up to their acclaimed “In Rainbows” release.  Good news! But before you get too excited, they have not yet confirmed an album release date, title or even if the music will be released in a similar ‘pay what you want’ format as “In Rainbows”. As bassist Colin Greenwood was quoted,”It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking what’s next?”

What’s next indeed.  I’m sure we all can’t wait to find out.

Happy Birthday OCMD!

cupcake

It was exactly one year ago today that I posted my first entry on The OCMD.  And this entry represents my 365th post exactly.  So tidy and neat how that worked out, isn’t it?  I wasn’t sure where this venture would take me or how long it would last, but one year, 365 entries, 35,000+ page views and 515 Twitter followers later – it appears I’m in this for the long haul.  And do I love it! It’s given me purpose and structure to dive headlong into my OCMD state of mind.  (Thanks Adam and Ryan for getting me here!) But most of all, I’ve really enjoyed connecting with all of you like-minded music geeks around the globe – from Aimee in Austin to Cian and Chalky in the UK, Mike in Montreal, Oz, Anna, Adrian and all the SF music bloggers.  It’s been great to meet you – albeit virtually in most cases.

Plans are brewing for the next phase of The OCMD, but I would love to hear from you what you like, don’t like and want to see more of.  Thanks for reading!

It’s Festival Season – Let’s Talk MDMA

ecstasy_pill_collage__i2007h0004

With the summer music festival season approaching, we thought it was high time to talk drugs, particularly that festival fave, ecstasy.  Born in 1912 but popularized in the late ’80s Manchester rave scene, MDMA has now clearly moved into much wider circles of use.  Part stimulant, part hallucinogen MDMA seems to be everywhere.  As with most drugs purity can be a real issue, but even in its purest form the research is mounting, E can be dangerous.  Acutely MDMA may cause thirst and many have wound up in the ER with seizures due to a low blood level of sodium (a result of drinking way too much water).  Overheating is another potential danger and the most common factor in E-related deaths.  Most users know too well the “terrible Tuesday” phenomenon, where emotions crash a few days after use, often to some serious depression.  Most alarming is data suggesting long term nerve damage and serotonin depletion.

There are several cool websites with oodles of info:

  • www.clubdrugs.org –info from the National Institutes of Health
  • www.erowid.org — “a member-supported organization providing access to reliable, non-judgmental information about psychoactive plants, chemicals, and related issues”

As with all risky ventures, the best plan is risk reduction. If abstinence is not an option, the experts would suggest the following:

  1. Check purity –  above websites have pictures of different types and their purity and test kits are available
  2. Drink fluids like you normally would, don’t drink gallons of water
  3. Avoid overheating: take dance breaks, sit and rest, seek fresh air and shade
  4. Don’t mix ecstasy with other drugs (including prescriptions, alcohol and marijuana)
  5. Don’t repeat doses
  6. Don’t drive!
  7. Most importantly, have a trusted, sober person around to keep on eye on you.  They can guage better than you can, if you need to rest, cool down, drink or stop drinking!

Have a safe festival season.
