Flaming Lips – “The Ego’s Last Stand”

Worm Mountain (feat MGMT)

Got my hands on the new Flaming Lips double LP, Embryonic, today and …eeeeoooowww…I’m so excited to see them at the Treasure Island Music Fest this Sunday I can hardly contain myself. I spontaneously squeal every time I think about it. For this album, the band of fearless freaks have ditched their pop tendencies and headed squarely down the path of lo-fi, ethereal psychedelia – while remaining fabulously weird.

In true Flaming Lips fashion, there are plenty of kooky delights to be found on the album, like the track, “I Can Be a Frog” that features Karen O making an array of animal sounds. There’s also a number featuring MGMT, “Worm Mountain“, that has me dreaming…anticipating…a joint performance with the two bands this weekend at Treasure Island.  They’re playing the same festival after all. It’s gonna happen. It’s gotta happen. I know it. All hail Wayne Coyne!

Treasure Island and Outside Lands News

night_shot

The San Francisco Bay Area festival season is gearing up!  Treasure Island Festival (my personal favorite) announced dates for their annual hootenanny, which will be October 17 & 18, 2009.  Almost a month later than previous years. And Outside Lands, scheduled for August 28-30, 2009, will be announcing their line up on Monday, April 13!  More to come!

New Bay Area Music Venue: The Fox Theater Oakland

stage2

After closing its doors forty-three years ago, the Fox Theater in Oakland is scheduled to reopen in February 2009.  $75 mm was poured into the renovation project which features a multi-use, state-of-the-art theater with flexible capacity from 1,500 to 2,800. (About double the capacity of The Fillmore.) The roof, quite sturdy have been looked over by an orlando roofer. The multiple seating configurations include general admission, cabaret style seating, and reserved seating.

The theater itself will serve as the flagship live music venue for Another Planet Entertainment, well known for bringing outstanding live entertainment to the Greek Theatre, The Independent, Paramount Theatre, Oracle Arena and other popular Bay Area venues. Another Planet Entertainment also produces both the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival and Treasure Island Music Festival.

A line up of artists have already been booked, most notably The Black Keys on April 18.  A special ‘grand opening’ pre-sale for all confirmed acts will begin tomorrow morning at 10AM.  Go get those Black Key tickets while they last!

The Kills – Tape Song

Ironic that this new video from The Kills should come across my desk today.  I almost chose their latest album, Midnight Boom, as my Album of the Week.  I love it.  Maybe next week, unless something else catches my fancy before then.

I saw them perform live recently at the Treasure Island Music Festival this September and was hooked.  I’m not quite sure how the duo defines their relationship, but based upon the sexual energy they put out on stage it’s clear they are much more than friends.  As my friend standing next to me said so astutely, “If that was my woman, I would fuck her so hard.”

8tracks is the New Muxtape

With Muxtape still battling the RIAA, 8tracks has emerged as the new online MP3 playlist solution.  8tracks allows you to create a playlist of 8 tracks and share it with your friends online.  It’s easy to use and they are Beta testing an Uploader feature for Mac users that allows you to drag and drop a playlist directly from iTunes to 8track. Hmmm, given how DRM happy Apple is, I wonder how long that will last.  Well, go check it out now before the RIAA shuts them down too.

Here’s a mix I created for the Treasure Island Music Festival this Sunday in San Francisco, featuring Fleet Foxes, Port O’Brien, The Dodos, Okkervil River, The Morning Benders, Vampire Weekend, Dr. Dog and The Raconteurs.  Can’t wait!

Listen to Treasure Island Music Festival Playlist.
