Band/Artist I am most happy to have discovered: Kurt Vile
Band/Artist I kick myself for missing: I missed a Nobunny show; I missed Primavera, and as I write this, I am about to miss a special intimate gig by Beach House. But I broke my personal best for shows this year, so I can’t complain!
Band/Artist everyone seems to love but I just can’t get behind: Wilco
Whoo hoo! The 8th Annual Budget Rock festival kicks into high gear this week right in my backyard from October 22-25. The Eagle Tavern, Thee Parkside and Bottom of the Hill will play host to the West Coast’s longest running garage rock festival. Don’t miss the opportunity to see some great local garage rock, including The Gris Gris, Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Onlys, Nobunny, the legendary Mummies and more! The best line up for sure is Sunday, October 25 at Bottom of the Hill featuring nearly all of the aforementioned bands. Oh yeah, let the shitgaze begin!
Nobunny, the Bay Area’s very own punk bunny extraordinaire, is back on US soil and playing tomorrow night, September 2, at Thee Parkside. It’s blogger Mike’s favorite band plus it’s his birthday. Happy Birthday, Mikey! So put on your pink briefs and come on out and celebrate before Nobunny heads out on tour with Jay Reatard.
I’ve been long overdue for a mixtape. This is one I’ve been collecting for a while – pulling tracks here and there from the greater garage rock movement that’s exploding right now in San Francisco. This playlist is a subset of that sound that I’m really digging right now….lo-fi, fuzzed out rock with a distinct punk edge and surf riff. Or Surf Punk for short. Yeah, I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of flack for that label but what the hell. There’s a nice south swell in town, and if I’m packing up my long board and wetsuit to go surfing, you can bet this is the mix I’ll be listening to.
Saturday, May 2nd, grants two chances to see local hero Nobunny before he hops off to Europe. Former Okmoniks drummer, Nobunny also earned the honor to MC last year’s fabulous Budget Rock VII Fest at Oakland’s (supreme shrine to Barbie) Stork Club. Donning a rabbit mask and perhaps some briefs, Nobunny aims to please even if he bleeds a little. The band is a crack snap garage lover’s dream. Be ready to sweat. All a part of the just announced Total Trash Festival, the Bay Area’s punk rock extravaganza, you can catch him at Oakland’s newly remodeled 1-2-3-4 Go! Records store sometime between 6 and 9, and catch him again at Oakland’s The Ghost Town Gallery later that evening. Support local musicians, and do not anger the bunny!
Other bands on the Total Trash line up include Seattle’s The Spits headlining, Portland’s The Pitty Fucks, Budget Rock faves Hunx & His Punk and The Pets! Be sure to check the bands’ MySpace pages for details for both SF and Oakland performance locations. Or you can try to decipher this festival poster.
