If you don’t already know about the San Francisco-based vintage rock trio, Leopold and His Fiction, you soon will. The band, who is working on their third album with the help of producer Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Devandra Banhart, Beachwood Sparks, Little Joy), gave us a sneak preview of their first single “Golden Friends”. And boy, do I like what I hear. The song oozes that 70s era blues-rock vibe I love so much. And if the rest of the album is as good as this track, we’re in for a treat.
So enjoy the first listen to “Golden Friends” here, and be sure to grab the singles vinyl release of this and b-side “Throne” on April 29th. If you’re headed to SXSW, be sure to catch them at one of these gigs.
I’ve really been enjoying this recent (mostly) girl band discovery from Los Angeles, Warpaint. And by the looks of their SXSW schedule, so is everyone else. Seeing that they are on the showcase line up for the biggest tastemakers on the Internet – including WOXY, Aquarium Drunkard,My Old Kentucky Blog, Pitchfork and Gorilla vs Bear – I’d say the future looks bright for this group who’s debut LP will be released later this year.
How do I love thee, Ty Segall? Let me count the ways. Here’s a new video that cropped up for the track “I Wear Black” from the duo Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin (of Charlie and The Moonhearts) off their album Reverse Shark Attack. Whatever that means.
LA-based, Holloys, have released a new limited edition split 7 inch with Dengue Fever featuring cover art by the visual artist and singer, Jim Brown. The first in a series of three split singles, each will feature a painting by Jim Brown. Collect all three to reveal the full artwork.
If these girls are going crazy, then sign me up. The stripped down Vancouver duo, calling themselves The Pack A.D., packs a real rock and roll punch with their ferocious brand of bluesy garage rock. Their new album, “We Kill Computers”, comes out April 27. They’ll be hitting SF en route to Austin. So catch them March 10 at Thee Parkside or at one of the SXSW showcases. All aboard the crazy train.

Artist: Twin Tigers Album: Gray Waves Release Date: March 2, 2010 For Fans Of: Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, A Place to Bury Strangers Featured Track: Sexless Love
Holy shit, this album is unreal. There are times when you hear a new band and just know they are going to be huge. Athens-based, Twin Tigers is one of them. Their debut LP, Gray Waves, out today on Old Flame Records is an epic assault of psychedelic, shoegaze rock. Jaw dropping good. The kinda stuff that’ll make you swoon. The kinda band that “could dismantle The Silversun Pickups from their perch.” The kinda sound that will keep you coming back for more. Get into this band is all I have left to say.
Need help? Okay. I have a handful of albums to giveaway to the first readers to email theocmd@gmail.com and claim them. Then head on out to The Rumble SF this Wednesday to hear them live…for free! RSVP here. And if that doesn’t work, then I’m sorry. You’re a lost cause and need to seek help elsewhere.
The new video from Caribou for “Odessa”, the single of their forthcoming album Swim on April 20. Cannot wait for these guys to swing back through town.
Portugal, The Man has a new album coming out this week (digitally), March 2, called American Ghetto. It’s a tall order to follow on the success of The Satanic Satanist, but one listen to this track leads me to believe this one will be just as good as their last. Get the digital version here.
Once again the good folks at FutureSounds have lined up a great night of free music for this month’s The Rumble on Wednesday March 3 at Cafe du Nord, officially dubbed as the NoisePop hangover. Hangover indeed. But this month’s line up is well worth your attention, featuring two of my favorite local groups, Lilofee and Stripmall Architecture, as well as Athens-based shoegaze rockers Twin Tigers whose new album Gray Waves is getting lots of love. Deservedly so. Don’t mis it.
I’ve been obsessing over this track from Norway’s Lindstrom & Christabelle’s new album, Real Life is No Cool. Which, by the way, has to be the best album title of 2010. I like to keep my eye on Lindstrom, Norway’s Prince of Disco. He’s quite prolific and always up to something cool. Usually I can take or leave most of what comes out of the electro pop genre but every now and then there’s a gem you just can’t resist and this track is one of them.
