The OCMD Mixtape: Permanent Ink

May love, laughter and music be with you always, CMC and AJH. Congratulations on your nuptials, beautiful love, new life and ink together. Here’s to you and the many music memories we’ve shared. And….uhh… my apologies for committing the worst party foul in wedding reception history. When it comes to shotgunning beer, I’ll always be on the J.V. team. *sulk*

SF Spotlight: The Beehive Spirit [Free EP!]

The Beehive Spirit “Monkey Song”

Okay folks, meet your new favorite San Francisco garage rock band – The Beehive Spirit. Yum! They just released their first EP and are getting ready to record their full length soon. A year in the making, the foursome recorded most of the EP at Coyote Hearing in Oakland, CA, with Jeremy Black (Dr. Dog, Big Light, Apollo Sunshine, Drug Rug) and Cochrane Miller (Apollo Sunshine, Tea Leaf Green, Big Light). While the final track “Georgia Hotel” was recorded at Greg Ashley’s (Gris Gris) studio warehouse in Oakland. A nice pedigree if I say so myself!

Get it for cheap or for free.

Stuck in My Head: Sonny & The Sunsets – “Lovin’ On An Older Gal”

Sonny & The Sunsets“Lovin’ on An Older Gal”

So in love with San Francisco’s very own Sonny & The Sunsets. (*blink*blink*blush*blush*swoon*) Daytrotter recently picked them up, so you know they’re destined for glory. I just adore Sonny Smith’s vocals. And the fact that Kelly Stoltz is involved only makes it better. Musical goodness all around. Go ahead, fall in love.

The Rumble SF Tonight @ Cafe du Nord!

Rumspringa – “Queer Eyed Boy”

The Rumble SF is tonight at Cafe du Nord featuring Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, LA’s Rumspringa and San Fran’s Billy & Dolly. At this point I don’t think we’re in need of any more hyperbole about the monthly Rumbles.  Why? Because it’s FutureSounds and they never let you down. Plus it’s free with an RSVP, for god’s sake. Just do it.

The Black Knights – “L.A. Hayfever”

The Black Knights “L.A. Hayfever”

I’m very smitten with this trashy, bluesy duo from Salford, England calling themselves The Black Knights. I was hooked with their ‘Parade of Pirahanas’ EP a while back, and am digging their debut LP “Sickle Cell Saturday Night” out now. If you like the stripped down dirty rock vibe of bands like the Band of Skulls, you’ll like these guys too. They’re super sweet guys to boot. Thought I’m sure the lead vocalist, who calls himself The Dark Reverend, may not take too kindly to how that comment might affect his badass image. But as they say, never judge a book by it’s cover.

This track, L.A. Hayfever rocks. Though the song is not about seasonal allergies. It’s a code word for the after effects of doing too much blow and constantly rubbing your nose, thinking there are still traces of it there.  So L.A.

[CONTEST] Name That Sample: Chain Gang of 1974 – “Stop”

Chain Gang of 1974 – “Stop

Welcome to the modern day version of “Name That Tune.” Except in this day and age, it’s “Name that Sample”. I find myself getting quite obsessed with trying to figure out the classic tracks these fancy new electronic artists are layering into their music. It’s a fun game I like to play with myself and the debut album from Kamtin Mohager’s Chain Gang of 1974, called White Guts, has given me lots of good fodder to keep me busy this summer. I’m very smitten with this album and his clear obsession for  70s/80s music that is prevalently sprinkled throughout the record. Listening to it is both a treasure hunt and a flashback. It’s just good fun up, down and all around.

So now I bring my fun mind game to you with The OCMD’s Name That Sample contest for the track “Stop”. The first reader to correctly name the artist and song that Mohager is sampling in this track will win this free Chain Gang of 1974 t-shirt. Go!
