Artist: Neneh Cherry + The Thing Album: The Cherry Thing Hails From: UK Release Date: June 18, 2012 Featured Track: “Dream Baby Dream (Four Tet Remix)
This track is hot, hot, hot. And is on heavy rotation on my playlist. Stuck in my head to be exact. A woman on the move with a fascinating heritage, Neneh Cherry is a creative force to be reckoned with. Don’t put her in a box. On her latest effort, she’s partnered with Sweden jazz trio The Thing, a group who took its name from a piece by world/free jazz trumpet great Don Cherry. So it makes sense that they should eventually team up with Don Cherry’s daughter.
The Cherry Thing tracklisting:
1. Cashback (Neneh Cherry)
2. Dream Baby Dream (Suicide)
3. Too Tough To Die (Martina Topley-Bird)
4. Sudden Movement (Mats Gustaffson)
5. Accordion (MF Doom)
6. Golden Heart (Don Cherry)
7. Dirt (The Stooges)
8. What Reason (Ornette Coleman)
Artist: Sonny & The Sunsets Album: Longtime Companion Hails From: San Francisco Release Date: June 26, 2012 Featured Track: “I See the Void”
I heard this track a while ago. Saved it and listened to it many times before realizing it was a Sonny & The Sunsets track. Proving that I truly do love every single thing he releases. This, their forthcoming release, is a country album. And fittingly so because it’s a breakup record about love and heartache. Every song written while ending his 10 year relationship with his girlfriend. Let’s hope it’s as healing as it is beautiful.
It’s 10:10 AM on 10/10/10. A perfect 10. These tri-numeral dates come around once a year and this year it falls on the number 10. Is it an auspicious day or a bunch of hullaballoo? There is a certain completeness of order with the number 10. For the Chinese the number is lucky, representing perfection or completion. We’re born with 10 fingers and 10 toes after all. Perfect beauty is measured on its scale. Top 10 lists are ubiquitous. And any respectable album contains at least 10 songs.
If you’re technologically-inclined, today is a “binary” day. The ones-and-zeros representing the binary code or the mathematical language “spoken” by computers to create all things digital. Converting the date 10/10/10 to binary code gives us 101010. And in the binary counting system, that number translates to 42, which means…absolutely nothing.
But hey, it’s a nice theme for a post isn’t it? And everyone loves a top 10 list. So, here’s mine. The 10 albums I’m obsessed with on this month, this day, this year. The albums I have on heavy rotation right now and keep coming back to again and again. Ten, in a long list, of albums you should most definitely own. Listed in no particular order, they are:
So in love with San Francisco’s very own Sonny & The Sunsets. (*blink*blink*blush*blush*swoon*) Daytrotter recently picked them up, so you know they’re destined for glory. I just adore Sonny Smith’s vocals. And the fact that Kelly Stoltz is involved only makes it better. Musical goodness all around. Go ahead, fall in love.
Band/Artist I am most happy to have discovered:Grizzly Bear (I finally get it with Veckatimest)
Band/Artist I kick myself for missing:Cass McCombs/Papercuts/Girls show at Great American Music Hall. Catacombs is an unreal album that I just started getting into a month too late.
Band/Artist everyone seems to love but I just can’t get behind: Girl Talk. He puts on an energetic live show, but I just can’t get into the albums. I appreciate the technique and skill involved, but I can’t really sit down and listen to a Girl Talk record.
