Music on Cassette Tape Still the Bomb…If You’re in Prison

Okay, more notes on a theme here, but I couldn’t resist poaching this hilarious post from Gizmodo today. See full post here, or read on:

“Los Angeles mail order catalog Pack Central may have found the last untapped pocket of consumers willing to pay retail for their music on physical formats—the cellblocks of our great nation’s prisons. And not just any format—turns out, music on cassette is the only way to get tunes that isn’t screened out as a potential deadly weapon. Wait, they still sell new music on cassettes?

Apparently so. Weezy’s “Tha Carter III,” Usher’s “Here I Stand” and Mariah Carey’s “E=MC2” are all among Pack Central’s current best selling tapes. If you’re man enough to rock the new Mariah Carey on cassette in the slammer, my hat’s off to you—I only feel comfortable singling you out from the safe confines of the internet.

Anyway, CDs are apparently too easy to splinter into a shiv (for disciplining the dude who laughed at your Mariah tapes), and the company even has to remove the metal screws from their tapes before shipping them out to get by the screeners (you guys make a good point below, though—I guess the cassette shivs are not as worrisome). The guy who keeps all those 20-year-old Walkmen in operating condition must be swimming in bartered cigarettes.”

CASSETTE FROM MY EX – The Heart of the Mixtape

“They were into you, so they made you a tape. Today you don’t have a cassette player, but you still can’t toss that mix. We share the stories and the soundtrack to your earliest loves.”

–Manifesto from CASSETTE FROM MY EX

Now that’s what I’m talking about! This site is all about people who searched for the deeper meaning of the mixtape.  It features mixes and the stories behind them from random and notable people, like Claudia Gonson – the drummer of The Magnetic Fields (have I mentioned I have an obsession with female drummers?)  I love it.

Danger Mouse – The Arbiter of Cool, Indie Music

I realized after obsessing this week over Beck’s new album, Modern Guilt‘, that I was listening to yet another Danger Mouse production. What is this guy up to and what else is he working on? A lot, so it seems.

Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) is famously known for remixing Jay Z‘s ‘Black Album‘ over samples from The Beatles ‘White Album’ to create, ‘The Grey Album.’ From there he collaborated with Cee-Lo (as half of Gnarls Barkley) to release the hugely popular ‘St. Elsewhere’. He’s also produced the debut album from The Good, The Bad and The Queen, and the latest releases of Sparklehorse, The Rapture and Gorillaz.

This year he’s in top form with producer title for the following releases:

Martina Topley-Bird (from Tricky), ‘The Blue God’; Featured Track: Phoenix

The Black Keys, ‘Attack and Release’; Featured Track: Same Old Thing

The Shortwave Set, ‘Replica Sun Machine‘; Featured Track: Harmonia

Beck, ‘Modern Guilt’; Featured Track: Modern Guilt

With his influences firmly rooted in electronica/trip-hop, I’ll definitely be tracking his next move.

Nightmares on Wax : New Track – 195lbs

It’s electronica day!  I was excited to find this exclusive stream of the new Nightmares on Wax track, 195lbs, on RCRD LBL today.   The track is from their yet to be released album, ‘Thought so…’, which is scheduled to drop August 25.

I pretty much own every NOW album and look forward to adding this one to my collection as well. They consistently produce the kind of electronica music I’m so fond of – the downtempo, trip-hop variety.

Check out the exclusive stream of 195lbs here.

Girls vs. Women

Here are two tiny bands I’m hot on at the moment – which also makes for a clever post. Both have albums releasing this week, have nary a female band member to speak of, but do have lots of them gracing the covers of their albums.

Girls hail from San Francisco and just released their debut album, Lust for Life. Each track has a distinctly different sound, which makes it difficult for me to put a label on this band; but it does give some clarity to their self-described music category – Tropical/Gothic/Thrash.  On several tracks, however, the lead singer’s voice does remind me of Elvis Costello. Featured is the track Hellhole Ratrace. Be sure to download the free track ‘Lust for Life‘ on RCRD LBL.

Women are a Canadian group (two of them brothers, actually) with their self-titled debut released July 8 on Flemish Eye Records.  I was very pleased to learn that Chad VanGaalen produced this album, of whom I’m a big fan.  He recorded the album in his basement on old tape machines and ghettoblasters.  To say their sound is lo-fi is an understatement. Featured is the track Black Rice.

Fleet Foxes: White Winter Hymnal

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Artist: Fleet Foxes
Album: Fleet Foxes
File Under: Indie Folk Rock
Recommended if You Like: Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Band of Horses, The Dodos, My Morning Jacket
Featured Track: White Winter Hymnal

For those of you who follow music, this is probably not a new band for you; but those of you who don’t, you must add this one to your collection.  The reaction I had to this Seattle-based quintet the first time I heard them was similar to my first experience with Bon Iver – wow!

I had to the good fortune to see them at SXSW this year while killing time before the Helio Sequence show. (I just love serendipity.) I remember being overwhelmed by the myriad of instruments they had on stage – acoustic and electric guitars, tom drums, mandolins, bass pedals, organs, dulcimers- all overlaid with the most beautiful, harmonious vocals I’ve ever heard.  The band clearly pays homage to their folk rock influences, but they do not get lost in it.   They synthesize a broad spectrum of styles and sounds into their own.  A classic for sure.

One to Watch: DigforFire.tv

My 3 year old is obsessed with The Duke Spirit and their lead singer Liela Moss. Every day he practices singing his favorite Duke Spirit songs into his microphone and playing his tambourine – ‘just like Liela’. Part of his self-prescribed training involves intently studying all of The Duke Spirit videos available on YouTube. They only have videos out for a few songs and most of the live footage available is unwatchable (‘that’s a bad one mamma’). So imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this amazing live performance from the soon to be launched DigforFire.tv.

There’s not a lot of information on the site as to what it’s all about, other than it looks to be NYC-based, if not affiliated with 89.1 WNYU. Whatever the case, the quality of the small amount of content they have up there now makes Pitchfork.tv look like amateurs.  It’s like the IFC for indie music, with well produced documentaries, interviews and live sessions.

I can’t wait to see more from these guys. In the meantime, we’ll be rocking out to this great live track from The Duke Spirit – This Ship Was Built to Last. They look so polished and professional here it’s hard to imagine they’ll be playing such a tiny venue as The Bottom of the Hill on July 23.

Panther Video – You Don’t Want Your Nails Done

One of my guilty pleasures, Panther, is coming to town tomorrow to play at the Bottom of the Hill.  The two-man show headed by Charlie Salas-Humara on vocals and Joe Kelly on drums is like James Brown and Peaches mash up.  They make me smile.  Check out this video and see for yourself.

Port O’Brien – I Woke Up Today

Oakland-based Port O’Brien posted the official video for the track ‘I Woke Up Today’ from their debut album, All We Could Do Was Sing.  After seeing them at SXSW this year, I’d say their video fairly accurately portrays their on stage presence as well – a raucous, ragtag ensemble of massed choruses and dancing kooks.  Still, there’s something there.  Even Pitchfork gave the album a coveted 7.5.  Go East Bay!
