King Khan & BBQ Show- “Invisible Girl”

Pitchfork reported today that The King Khan & BBQ Show (not to be confused with King Khan & The Shrines) have been arrested while in Kentucky, causing them to cancel some Mid-West shows. The band is out on bail but their tour manager is still behind bars for driving with a suspended license and in possession of controlled substances. Whoopsy.  The band is scheduled to play The Independent in San Francisco this Wednesday, November 18 with Those Darlins’.  Let’s hope they get back on track for their West Coast appearances.  The band is touring in support of their new album, Invisible Girl.

Guilty Pleasure: Tigercity – “Fake Gold”

Tigercity“Fake Gold”

I like to indulge in a little indie pop now and then and Brooklyn’s Tigercity has been my latest guilty pleasure. Something about their sound, which is a little like Eye of the Tiger meets Hall & Oates, feels kinda good in way that’s so familiar and original all at the same time.  Their latest album, Ancient Lover, is out now.

Spiral Stairs – “Cold Change”, “Stolen Pills”

Pavement co-founder Scott Kannberg, aka Spiral Stairs, makes his bona fide solo debut with the release of ‘The Real Feel’ this past month.  And we all had the pleasure to witness him first hand at this year’s Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco. The videos he’s released in conjunction with the album are genius. Enjoy!

Stuck In My Head: Tune-Yards, “Want Me To”

TuneYards

Tune-Yards, “Want Me To”

After drowning myself in Atlas Sounds’ ‘Logos’ for the past few weeks, the discovery of Tune-Yards was the perfect experimental elixir to divert my attention. Like Bradford Cox, Tune-Yards, is a solo project comprised singularly of New England native Merrill Garbus. Her debut album, Bird Brains (note: this is the second Bird Brains entitled album to be featured on the OCMD in a week!  hmmm.), released on vinyl by 4AD Records earlier this year. Recorded on a digital voice recorder and assembled using shareware mixing software, she’s produced an impressive DIY album infusing intoxicating drum patterns and tape loops with a worldly vocal rhythm reminiscent of M.I.A.

“Want Me To” is a track from the recently released ‘Bird Droppings’ digital EP.
