Dan Auerbach @ Bimbos

Rock and roll hoochie coo! Man, my musical stars were aligned last week. There’ve been so many good shows and so many more to come with SXSW merely days away, I think my head’s going to explode.  Dan Auerbach‘s show at San Francisco’s Bimbos last Friday was just another display of rock-n-roll awesomeness.

Better known as half of The Black Keys, Auerbach’s solo endeavor is more of the same swampy, blues-tinged rock but, dare I say, even bigger and more dynamic. Whereas The Black Keys have that stripped down two-man band vibe, Dan has a 5 piece band supporting him (mostly comprised of musicians from the project he produced, Hacienda): two drummers, keyboardist/organist, rhythm guitar and bass player.  Wow!  I lost my socks somewhere at Bimbos.

If you’re going to SXSW and don’t have Dan Auerbach on your agenda, you’re a bona fide fool.  Pencil it in and make sure you pick up his new album, Keep it Hid.

Jack White’s New Band: The Dead Weather

My man Jack White announced the formation of a new band, The Dead Weather, this week.  The supergroup features Alison Mosshart, of the London-based The Kills as lead singer; Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar; and Jack Lawrence, from the Raconteurs, on bass. The renowned guitarist, Jack White, plays drums. Go figure.

Their debut album Horehound will be released in June.  The single “Hang You From the Heavens” is available now on iTunes.

Video: Bishop Allen – “Dimmer”

The new video for Bishop Allen‘s “Dimmer” off their Grrr album released this week. Sounds like this album is going to be a Judah favorite!  They’ll be making the rounds at SXSW and recommend them live.  Their Broken Strings tour was one of my surprise favorite live performances of 2008!

Bishop Allen SXSW Schedule:

  1. March 19, 2009 – 1:30 PM:  Radio Room (Brooklyn Vegan)
  2. March 19, 2009 – 8:30 PM: Mohawk (Dead Oceans Showcase)

White Lies – To Lose My Life

white-lies-to-lose-my-life-2009

Listen to “Death

I’m having a momentary crush on White Lies.  My first thought upon hearing them was Interpol meets Echo and The Bunnymen.  And I have a serious soft spot for Brit rock and Ian McCulloch,  so when I received an advance copy of UK trio’s To Lose My Life recently I couldn’t help but fall in love a little bit. It’s blatantly 80s influenced, but represents everything I like about Brit rock and the 80s in one album; guitar focused arena rock with a big dose of that new wave sound.

To Lose My Life drops on Fiction Records 3/17. Their US tour kicks off in Austin at SXSW, making their way to San Francisco April 11 to play Slim’s and wrapping up at Coachella.  In the meantime, check out the new video to “To Lose My Life”…

The Boxing Lesson – Wild Streaks & Windy Days

“Dark Side of the Moog”:

I was intrigued by both the music and bio of Austin-based psych rockers, The Boxing Lesson. You could certainly classify the sound of the trio’s second LP, Wild Streaks & Windy Days, as stoner rock.  And that’s where the story gets interesting.  I couldn’t help but notice that the band’s drummer was in federal prison and therefore on the road with a touring drummer.  Hmmm, I had to ask the press manager why.  I mean we’re talking federal prison.  He must’ve killed someone or something.

But no, turns out drummer Jake Mitchell is doing 60 months in federal prison on marijuana charges. Apparently he was running a little homegrown pot operation out of his house. What’s most disturbing is that he was convicted under the Patriot Act and has been branded a Narco-Terrorist.  And it gets worse.  His wife is currently serving a six month sentence as a conspirator for not turning her husband in.  His family has lost everything trying to appeal this conviction.

I couldn’t help but contrast this story to that of Bernard Madoff’s – a man who has perpetrated the biggest scam in Wall Street history by admittedly defrauding clients for up to $50 billion in investments.   He has completely ruined the lives of thousands and yet he sits comfortably in his NY penthouse secretly mailing his multi-million dollar watch collection to friends and family.  Tell me, who is the terrorist here?  Clearly we live in a society that enforces different rules for different classes of people. It’s sad really and only reinforces a hard lesson I learned a long time ago – what’s legal isn’t necessarily fair.

The band will be playing SXSW this year so if you’re going be sure to check them out.  Reportedly their live shows are epic.

Thank you Justin Gage!  Aquarium Drunkard’s label Autumn Tone Records released RAM On L.A. today – a tribute album to Paul McCartney’s classic 1971 solo album RAM (one of my favorite albums of all time, I might add) featuring a dozen L.A. based bands hand picked by Justin himself.

The not-for-profit compilation is available free via aquariumdrunkard.com.  But listeners are encouraged to make donations to No More Landmines, the fantastic cause that “helps and empowers communities around the world by removing the threat of landmines and unexploded weapons.” A cause championed by Sir Paul McCartney himself.  Donate here.
