Apteka, “Traitor”

Hey, wake up!  The long weekend’s over.  And what better way to dust off the cobwebs than a little shoegaze rock from Apteka for your Tuesday back to work blues.  If you haven’t checked out the Chicago-based band yet here on The OCMD, here’s another chance to do so. The psyche rockers impressed the hell out of everyone earlier this summer at The Rumble in San Francisco.  And it appears they’re up to it again with a new single, “Traitor“, sent to me late last week for your listening pleasure.  Very MBV meets Jane’s Addiction. Enjoy!

“The Trouble With Flying” – Orba Squara

Orba Squara“The Trouble With Flying”

“The trouble with flying is that you risk falling. But if you never try, you’ll never get that chance to soar.”

Orba Squara is the stage name of Mitch Davis.  The popularity of his first album, Sunshyness, earned him the title ‘the new Moby’ in the press because 9 out of the 10 songs in his debut were licensed for film and television projects. If you listen to his stuff, you’ll likely recognize it.

Not something I’d listen to on a regular basis, but word of his new project coming October 27, The Trouble with Flying, caught my attention mostly because the title track features the guitar and vocal work of Billy Squier. Whoa.  There’s a name I haven’t heard in a good decade or so. The other thing that caught my attention was the band’s website. Well done and worth a visit. Check it out.

Atlas Sound“Walk A Thin Line (Fleetwood Mac Cover)”

The solo project of Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox, Atlas Sound, has released a most amazing cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Walk A Thin Line”.  Genius. Atlas Sound is playing The Great American Music Hall on November 3 with Broadcast.  An excellent show indeed.

I Love English Teeth

English Teeth – “English Teeth Invasion”

The band, silly.  Not Christopher Hitchens teeth. And no, they’re not from England. They’re from Austin, TX and I love them! The unsigned trio shot an arrow straight to my heart with their brand of Texas-style indie brit rock whose sound pays homage to the best of the best:  The Who, The Stooges, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground.  It’s oh so good!

JEFF the Brotherhood – “Bone Jam”

JEFF the BrotherhoodBone Jam”

Jeffro Tull.  I like this guy’s style and this video.  This song is the first single off of JEFF the Brotherhood’s “Heavy Days” album,  due out October 13.    The Nashville-based group is known for their uncontrolled live show and “we’ll play anywhere” attitude.  So if that’s got you curious, be sure to check them out tonight at 21 Grams in Oakland.

Electronica Fans: Meet Hyperstory [MP3]

Hyperstory“A Happening”

Here’s a tasty treat that landed in my inbox and very much appealed to my latent electronica/trip hop sensibilities.  Say hello to LA-based Hyperstory, the musical identity of Los Angeles based musician C. Scott Blevins. Due out November 10, his self-titled album oozes ambient beats and textures reminiscent of Gorillaz.

Birds of Avalon – “Your Downtime Is Up” [Free MP3]

Birds of Avalon, “Your Downtime is Up”

Yet another band hand plucked by The Flaming Lips to play their curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in NY next month is Birds of Avalon. The Raleigh, NC-based group self-recorded the new album, Uncanny Valley, with all analog equipment. Mitch Easter (REM, Wilco, Pavement) helped mix the album. Yummy lo-fi goodness.
