Heavy Rotation: Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Artist: Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Album: Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Homeland: Portland, OR (via New Zealand)
File Under: Psych Pop

Spooling endlessly on the self-titled Fat Possum debut from this Portland (by way of New Zealand) group. Listening to it feels like what a 70s era photograph would sound like if it came to life. Desaturated, lo-fi, vintage goodness. They’re currently on the road, supporting Yuck, and will be hitting The Independent in San Francisco on July 26.

Best New Music: Abbe May – “Design Desire”

Artist: Abbe May
Album: Design Desire
Release Date: July 8, 2011
Homeland: Perth, Australia
Featured Tracks: “Mammalian Locomotion” (Remixed by Tame Impala)

“Taurus Chorus”

I’m having a love affair with Australian music scene of late and have been particularly obsessed with Perth-based blues rock goddess Abbe May. I’ve been anxiously awaiting her solo debut for…oh, about nine months now. Ever since I stumbled upon her smoking single “Mammalian Locomotion”. Then when I heard Tame Impala remix it shortly thereafter, I knew I was on to something. And so finally, it’s here. “Design Desire” was released today and as good as I hoped it would be. The kind of soul satisfying, ass kicking rock and roll that smacks you in the face and keeps you coming back for more.

James Brown….Turning Japanese

Seems like no American celebrity can resist the lure of hawking Japanese products when the price is right. Even James Brown. Loved this footage of “The Godfather of Soul” pimping Miso soup to “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine”. One can only imagine the Lost in Translation like scenes of JB trying to dissect the tonalities of the Japanese language. Misoba? Misoba. Misoba!

Happy Friday!

[July 06] The Rumble SF: Hot Toddies, Luke Rathborne, White Cloud

Hot Toddies

Luke Rathborne

White Cloud

I can hear the excuses already…I just got back home…holiday weekend…I’m tired. Wah wah wah. I’m having none of it. I say, what better excuse to keep the good times going than to run on over to Milk Bar July 6 for some all girl band action with Oakland’s surf pop princesses, The Hot Toddies. Not too shabby, right? Add to that the soulful sounds of Luke Rathborne and the psych pop sounds of San Francisco’s White Cloud, and you have yourself an eclectic evening of music for cheap or for free. For free if you RSVP on the Eventbrite page here. For cheap if you show up at the door – $5. It all goes down at 9PM.

San Cisco – “Golden Revolver”

San Cisco – “Golden Revolver”

“Solitude is Bliss”

Don’t let the album cover art scare you. This new Australian group is full of sweet, summery pop goodness. The likes that Vampire Weekend or Foreign Born might deliver with the added bonus of a girl drummer. Their EP Golden Revolver is just out and already on the airwaves down under. And oh yeah, it also comes with a rippin’ cover of Tame Impala’s “Solitude is Bliss.” Nice.

SF Spotlight: Chucha Santamaria Y Usted

Chucha Santamaria Y Usted – “Fiebre Tropical”

Chucha Santamaria y usted! Que chucha?! Chucha tu madre, bitches. Say it like you mean it, then go chucha yourself because I don’t like that kind of vulgar slang on my site. Whether the soon to be married, Oakland via Puerto Rico and New York duo (Sofia Cordova and Matt Kirkland) had political defiance or social deviance in mind with that name, it kinda works with their MIA-esque sound. Their self-titled debut, released on Austin-based Young Cubs, is officially out today and sure to be your go to summer synth jam.

Wunderkid J. Irvin Dally produced one of my favorite albums last year, Despistado. A simply stunning album you must add to your collection. And he’s back with a new limited edition vinyl 7″ Sun Room/Teeting, to be released by the Bay Area’s very own Pretty Blue Presents on July 12. Supporting the release, he’ll be touring the West coast with a stop at San Francisco’s Hotel Utah next Friday, July 8 playing in conjunction with Garret Pierce. Hello date night!

July 7 – Los Angeles, CA – Hotel Cafe
July 8 – San Francisco, CA – Hotel Utah

Painted Palms – “I Will Truck” (Dirty Projectors Cover)

Painted Palms“I Will Truck” (Dirty Projectors Cover)

“All of Us”

Canopy, the debut EP of the half San Francisco-based duo, Painted Palms, is out now on Secretly Canadian. The pair have been on quite a ride since they self released the album earlier this year, grabbing the attention of tastemaker label Secretly Canadian just days after blogs posted the first tracks. Of Montreal also took note and booked the band as the main support for their 26 date tour this year. Not too shabby for their first go! With a label behind them, they’ve scheduled a West Coast tour in support of their new EP, kicking off in San Francisco July 21 at Slims supporting Memory Tapes. Nice line up indeed.

[Stuck in my Head] Funeral Suits – “Colour Fade”

Artist: Funeral Suits
Homeland: Dublin, Ireland
Featured Track: “Colour Fade”

This song from Dublin-based trio, Funeral Suits, has been on repeat since it landed in my SoundCloud inbox last week. They’ve just recorded their debut album with acclaimed producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths) set to be released this year. “Colour Fade” is the first single from the album. The group made their SXSW debut this year as well and have played with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit, The Maccabees, and Local Natives. Get addicted!

Thurston Moore – “Demolished Thoughts”

Thurston Moore’s (of Sonic Youth fame) third solo effort, “Demolished Thoughts”, is simply lovely. Quickly emerging as one of my favorite albums this year. Produced by Beck, the effort is being coined acoustic folk. But don’t let the wimpy genre fool you.  His music still has the same intensity you would expect from a Sonic Youth tune, just unplugged, and dusted with a little Beck fairy dust for ambience. An intoxicating combination.

The album features Thurston on guitar and vocals, Samara Lubelski on violin, Mary Lattimore on harp, Beck on synths, vocals and bass, and Joey Waronker on percussion, among others. Thurston will be stopping through the Bay Area with Kurt Vile for two shows next month. Hello!  Mark your calendars and reserve your seats for July 25 at The New Parish in Oakland and July 26 at Great American Music Hall in SF. In the meantime, enjoy this Take Away show from La Blogotheque.
