SXSW Pick: Boy + Bear

Artist: Boy+Bear
Album: Debut LP Forthcoming
Homeland: Australia
Track: “Mexican Mavis”

I sound like a broken record but I’ll say it again…Australia is where it’s at. Boy & Bear is another Australian band bound for Austin that’s sure to make some waves. Especially after being hand picked by groups like Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Angus & Julia Stone to support their tours.Their EP With Emperor Antarctica is out now and a forthcoming debut full length album is in the works.

James Vincent McMorrow – “If I Had A Boat”

Artist: James Vincent McMorrow
Album: “Early In The Morning”
Release Date: Jan 25, 2011
Featured Track: “If I Had A Boat”

When it comes to singer/songwriters my reactions are pretty binary. They either bore me to tears or move me to tears. The debut release James Vincent McMorrow creeps into the latter category. Especially this song. Like Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, he’s got that special something. A kind of soulful wistfulness you just want to wrap yourself up and get lost in. His new album, “Early In The Morning”, just released last week. He too will be on the line up for SXSW.

Alexander Ebert – “Truth”

Artist: Alexander Ebert
Album: Alexander
Release Date: March 1, 2011
Featured Track: “Truth”

You know that band Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros? Yeah, you might have heard of them. Well, Alexander Ebert – the lead singer for that band – is about to release his debut solo album featuring ten lovely tunes he wrote and composed entirely himself. Such a crafty and talented fella. And from what I’ve heard I quite prefer his solo work. He sorta has that Andrew Bird quality that is hard to resist. But Edward Sharpe fans, do not fret. Alexander has not defected. He will be back in the studio to finish recording the second LP for the band due out later this year. Look for him at SWSW this year.

Andy Clockwise – “Cocaine & Champagne”

Andy Clockwise - “Cocaine & Champagne”

We love Andy Clockwise.  One of my favorite performances of SXSW this year, these guys are as much fun off stage as they are on it. The LA (by way of Australia)-based band is fresh off an Australian tour with Julian Casablancas and is back in SoCal celebrating the release of their new EP “Are You Well” tonight at the Troubador. They also released a new single today, “Remember Love”. Check out the video for it and enjoy this yummy track I just got, “Cocaine & Champagne.”  One day we’ll get them up here in SF, I promise.

A Dirty Old Man’s Recap of SXSW 2010

As reported by the OCMD’s very own dirty old man, Blogger Mike.  All the more reason to love him!

The Peelies“Debra Lane”

Five barely legal chicks from Montreal.  They sing in French and they rock sloppy.  They played Sonny’s Vintage, Spiderhouse and more. Their new EP “Together Forever” is out now.

Victoria Williams“Water To Drink”

Mature, quirky little number… lives in my fave desert, Joshua Tree.  Some Harley guy was checkin’ her out.  She sang a real sad song about death that made me cry, once at Maria’s Taco xpress, and again at Jovitas.

Dum Dum Girls - “Catholicked”

Need I say more?  Truth be told, they bored me.  Some kind of inferior, slick, LA version of the Vivian Girls.  The French Legation does have a great lawn though.

Venice is Sinking - “Ryan’s Song”

Mmmm legs and violin.  LEGS look good to me in the morning….LEGS look good to me at night.  I bought 2 cd’s and a shirt with a whale on it.

Allo Darlin‘ – “Dreaming

I must admit my fetish, yes…ukelele, and this cutey can play.  Sweetest pop songs I have heard in some time.  Nearly got me dancing, and I don’t dance.  Very delicious (free) beer at Waterloo Cycles.  2nd of 3 shows I caught.

The Coathangers - “Shut The Fuck Up”

Talk about fetish.  These girls got their freak on.  Nasty, yes, but intriguing.  Caught these ladies in the parking lot of an Ethiopian restaurant called Karibu.  Followed by Fungi Girls.  No actual girls but still great!

Dengue Fever - “One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula”

Wow, now that is a dress. Funky, 60′s laced Cambodian goodness.  Her sister was at the show.  She hadn’t seen her sister in 7 years!

? – played just before Wetdog at Cheer Up Charlies around 1pm.  I wanna say her name is Sierra, yes I will call her Sierra… Made for a nice surprise 1st show of the day.

Wetdog - “Lower Leg”

Sometimes you just need a woman with a sense of humor.  These nerdy, UK, art school drop-outs got it going on.  Great show.

Golden Triangle - “Prize Fighter”

What is not to like?  They come from the land of Vivian Girls (Brooklyn), share some garage roots and even a bit of psychedelia.

Sixteen Deluxe – “Fetus

Back from retirement and rocking harder than ever.  Any band that starts a set with Eno and ends with Big Star’s Kangaroo gains my lust and devotion.  Spiderhouse sure has lots of stages!

Titus Andronicus“Titus Andronicus”

The chick has this thrift store librarian thing goin’ on.  Her and the boys have loads of energy.  Sounded great on Scoot’s new patio with $2 Schlitz.  They sound nothing like the boss.
