Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – “Nothing But Our Love”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – “Nothing But Our Love

I’m betting on Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Why? Because I know how to pick a name. Ask my Dad. Being the daughter of a race horse breeder, I spent far too much time at the race track learning how to gamble at a tender age. Oh, the countless hours he spent trying to make me a shrewd and savvy horse gambler. Teaching me how to read the programs, analyze the stats, make a wager. Instead I would tune him out and study all the race horse names and their intended puns…B Sharp, Flurtini, Let’s Make Ideal, Minor de Best.  See, isn’t that so much more fun than crunching numbers and stats? I think so.

So I’m putting $5 on Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to Show. Described as “Michigan’s answer to The Morning Benders”, I love their EP Horse Power with it’s Beach Boy-esque harmonies and bubbly beats. It’s pure feel good music. Plus I appreciate the duo’s ethos to become professional men of music and leisure. Let’s all support them in this quest, shall we? You can start by seeing them September 8 at The Rumble San Francisco. RSVP here.

On the Verge: The Vaccines – “If You Wanna”

The Vaccines“If You Wanna”

Apparently everyone in the music industry has been a buzz the past few weeks over this demo from London’s The Vaccines. So much so that attempts were made to keep the band and it’s members a mystery so as not to fall victim to the hype mill. With a little Beach Boys, The Ramones and The Jesus and Mary Chain influences all mixed up they’ve got themselves quite a catchy concoction of vintage rock and roll goodness going on.  Will they be a one track wonder or the real deal?  We’ll have to wait and see.

Buke & Gass – “Your Face Left Before You”

Buke & Gass“Your Face Left Before You”

I’m kinda smitten with this Brooklyn-based duo Buke & Gass (pronounced byook & gace), which is the description of their own self-modified instruments  -  the ”buke” (a self-modified six-string former baritone ukulele) and the ”gass” (a guitar-bass hybrid of his own creation). Their upcoming debut full-length, Riposte, is out Sept. 14th on Brassland.

Relationship Hype Cycle

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings“Better Things”

I’ve been studying way too many technology hype cycles lately, especially working in the mobile apps space where there’s lots and lots of growth, hype and expectation. I couldn’t help but muse recently the startling similarities between technology hype cycles and love relationships.  It’s jaw dropping actually.  See for yourself.  Correlate these hype cycle phases with the amount of time currently invested in your own relationship and tell me….where are you in the relationship hype cycle? Scary, huh.

But don’t despair, if you’re wallowing in the Trough of Disillusionment (and that’s a really hard place to be), let me suggest some inspirational sounds from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings new album I Learned the Hard Way. Because at the end of the day that’s the only way we ever really learn, isn’t it? The hard way. Featuring tracks like, “The Game Gets Old,” “Without a Heart”, and “Momma Don’t Like My Man”, I think Sharon has a thing or two to teach you about love and relationships… and get you back on the path to the Slope of Enlightenment.  Because we’ve all got “better things to do.”

Tweak Bird – “A Sun…Ahh Ahh”

Tweak Bird - “A Sun/Ahh Ahh”

A sun…ahhhh.  My sentiments exactly today as I lapped up the 100 degree heat and blistering sun that was shining on San Francisco. So bright, so hot, so clear you could see the Farallon Islands while standing on the beach in shorts and a tank top. It was mesmerizing and bewitching. The whole city celebrated with a collective strip tease that carried on into the evening light of the full moon. It’s August 24 and summer has finally arrived in San Francisco. A concept that, as of last week, seemed one million light years away.

In Love Again with Leopold

Leopold and His Fiction – “Broke

Not that I ever really fell out of love with Leopold and His Fiction.  It was more like a momentary distraction by shiny, new music objects.  Music is problematic that way.  Especially when you suffer from OCMD. Even if you’re happy with what you’ve got, you can’t help but look over your shoulder for something new and different. Well, thanks to The Bay Bridged and their fabulous Rock Make Fest yesterday, I’ve come back home to my roots and fallen head over heels in love again with Leopold and His Fiction and their sultry, vintage rock vibe. Emphasis on rock because man do these guys lay it down. They’re hotter than ever.  And I felt oh so complete leaving the festival yesterday with an earful of vintage rock and my new vintage dress and shades. Thanks for keeping me hip, Bay Bridged.

[SUNDAY] SF Rock Make Street Fest w/ Set Times

Continuing the tradition, San Francisco’s The Bay Bridged, is hosting the 3rd Annual Rock Make Street Festival in the heart of the Mission this Sunday from 11AM – 6PM. Featuring 100 arts and crafts vendors, three stages of music and entertainment filled with great local indie bands, and a beer garden with tasty brews….it’s an event not to be missed.  And did I mention it’s free?  Be there!

The OCMD Mixtape: Permanent Ink

And….uhh… my apologies for committing the worst party foul in wedding reception history. When it comes to shotgunning beer, I’ll always be on the J.V. team. *sulk*

SF Spotlight: The Beehive Spirit [Free EP!]

The Beehive Spirit - “Monkey Song”

Okay folks, meet your new favorite San Francisco garage rock band – The Beehive Spirit. Yum! They just released their first EP and are getting ready to record their full length soon. A year in the making, the foursome recorded most of the EP at Coyote Hearing in Oakland, CA, with Jeremy Black (Dr. Dog, Big Light, Apollo Sunshine, Drug Rug) and Cochrane Miller (Apollo Sunshine, Tea Leaf Green, Big Light). While the final track “Georgia Hotel” was recorded at Greg Ashley’s (Gris Gris) studio warehouse in Oakland. A nice pedigree if I say so myself!
