It’s just come back in vogue of late. Lo-fi is a recording aesthetic used to create a more raw, authentic sound. Some bands are real purists and will record only on analog 4-track. Others can use digital techniques like low-end syths to create the effect. Either way it’s a bona fide genre that seems to be growing. Think Wavves, No Age, Times New Viking, Ty Segall, Vivian Girls. Pretty much any underground garage band in SF right now.
